The pictures below are from my world. Two murders, one theft, and one suspected gun that shut down the middle school. All of this has happened since school started in the school district I retired from in May, and where James currently teaches.
These children are the reason I am doing what I'm doing. The kids are literally dying. Don't get me wrong, I know tragic events like these aren't unique to the Kansas City area. However, according to one site (http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/mo/kansas-city/83rd-st/#crime), the median for violent crime in Kansas City is 12.56 per 1000 residents, compared to a state median of 4.33, and national median of 3.8. It's a bleak picture. Will we answer the call?
I am a blessed woman for so many reasons. One reason is that the Lord loved me enough to bring me to this place where He could break my heart for His children. Another is that He is allowing me to do something I love, write, to reach out to His children.
My first outreach was to my former elementary school. My former student, Isaiah, was little Angel's cousin (the grinning little girl in the pink dress who was murdered at 7-Eleven last fall). I didn't know until after sharing and giving books to Isaiah and his new classmates about his connection. (A book was also sent to Angel's family, reaching out with a message of love, hope and forgiveness.)
God is so good, and His timing impeccable! It may seem small, but to 8 and 9 year old kids trying to understand a cruel world, I believe God's message of forgiveness and hope fills the pages of LIFE WITH BOBBY AND BONNIE. More local school outreach visits are on the horizon.
In his book, My Utmost for His Highest, Oswald Chambers said, "The call of God is not just for a select few but for everyone. Whether I hear God's call or not depends on the condition of my ears, and exactly what I hear depends on my spiritual attitude" (1992).
My heart is overflowing with gratitude that I get to reach out to kids, that God trusts me with His work. He began putting my fantastic Dream Team together and in my life over 40 years ago. He placed each of them in roles that touch the lives of children in challenging circumstances. LuAnn, Brenda, Lynnette (my Dream Team) and I aren't where we are doing what we do by accident.
This week, I am thrilled to be joining LuAnn's ministry in the Denver area. Visits to Toledo with Brenda and to southeast Kansas with Lynnette are in the works. We're reaching out with the gospel of Jesus Christ to kids who desperately need to hear it, and giving them their own book with God's message.
You can help! For every two and half books sold, one book can be given to an at risk child. Easy: 2 & 1/2 sold = 1 given. Will you answer the call? Help us get reach out to the kids who need it most.
8 Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom shall I send as a messenger to my people? Who will go?”
And I said, “Lord, I’ll go! Send me.”
