In our very electronic age, we typically don’t think of candles as utilitarian. Most of us have candles somewhere in our homes. We use them for decorating or fragrance, but have you ever had to use them to read by?
We light candles for the ambience their soft glow spreads around a room, or maybe just on birthday cakes. I heard one of my favorite decorators on tv once say that candles are meant to be lit, otherwise they are useless.
The Gospel of Matthew tells us that Jesus told seekers during the Sermon on the Mount what He thought about sharing our light. It belongs on a lamp stand, not under a bowl. He charged the crowds to be beacons of light to their world. How can we do anything less?
