One of my grand ideas was to crochet mufflers for the three oldest grandkids. It was very therapeutic! Even after I finished theirs (before school started), I have continued crocheting.
But, guess what, Dear Reader? I LOST THEM! Yep, sure did. All of the mufflers were finished, and I lost them.
I was so busy making sure they were tucked safely away from the prying eyes of two granddaughters, that I couldn't find them myself. I kept getting into closets and cupboards, thinking, "They've got to be in there somewhere!"
We're in the thralls of advent, a season of preparation. As I looked for mufflers, I couldn't help but wonder what else I may have lost.
4 If any of you has a hundred sheep, and one of them gets lost, what will you do? Won’t you leave the ninety-nine in the field and go look for the lost sheep until you find it? 5 And when you find it, you will be so glad that you will put it on your shoulder 6 and carry it home. Then you will call in your friends and neighbors and say, “Let’s celebrate! I’ve found my lost sheep.”
Luke 15:4-6 CEV
But what about the people we've lost. Not the loved ones who have passed away, but the friends, the colleagues, we thought we'd be close to forever ... and it turns out, forever didn't last.
What about the gifts of advent that the Christ Child came to give us access to? Have we lost some of our hope, love, joy, or peace? Have we forgotten that the more we give them away, the more we have?
18 “The Lord’s Spirit has come to me, because he has chosen me to tell the good news to the poor.
The Lord has sent me to announce freedom for prisoners, to give sight to the blind, to free everyone
19 and to say, ‘This is the year the Lord has chosen.’”
Luke 4:17-19 CEV
14 I am the good shepherd; I know my own and my own know me, 15 as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep ... 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; 28 and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand.
John 10:14 -15, 27 - 29 RSV
