In a minute, I began asking, "How did they get there from ... where?" Going over lyrics to some of our favorite carols, like "We Three Kings" and "The First Noel" really didn't help.
How many kings, or wise men, were there? Where did their journeys begin?
10 May the kings of Tarshish and of the isles render him tribute, may the kings of Sheba and
Seba bring gifts!
Psalm 72:10 RSV
Okay, if the wise men began their journeys to Bethlehem from Tarshish and Seba, they would have seen the star, and traveled eastward. But what about Matthew's account?
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, 2 “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him.”
Matthew 2:1-2 RSV
I thought my head was going to explode.
And then the rubber hit the road.
I could spend countless hours delving into research to try and discover for myself where the wise men originated from. But, I don't think that's what I'm called to do.
Or, I could simply and humbly, place my trust in the One who called the shots at the first Nativity, and still does today.
8 Israel, you are my servant. I chose you, the family
of my friend Abraham.

10 Don’t be afraid. I am with you. Don’t tremble with fear. I am your God. I will make you strong,
as I protect you with my arm and give you victories.
Isaiah 41:8-10 CEV
Like many of you, I firmly believe God has called me to write some of His messages to His children. But, unlike some, the messages I write are literally for children (and their stakeholders).
I long to share those messages with as many kids as possible. How often have I asked myself, "Can I get there from here?" How often has my dubious soul asked the same thing of the Lord?
Then He smiled, and took me back to His Word.
I've been struggling the last few weeks to discern my word for 2018. And here's the word I believe the Lord wants to use to direct me this year: DESPERATE.
Can I get there from here? Only if I'm DESPERATE to find the Babe. Will you join me in desperately seeking the King so we may lay our gifts at His feet?
