Several years ago, both Tom and I lost our jobs. It was tough! Many sleepless nights, awake worrying, not knowing if or when things would get better.
During the months when Tom and I were both out of work and our meager resources were quickly slipping away, God turned our loaves and fishes into just enough and just in time over and over again. We were thankful the ordeal lasted less than a year. We've come to be even more thankful for the lessons it taught us.
May I take a moment to praise my husband? Tom is the consummate Boy Scout, honest, clean, reverent, etc. His parents did a super job of raising him to be a man of integrity.
Unfortunately, in today's world, integrity isn't always valued. Just when we were getting firmly back on our feet from the earlier setback, Tom lost his job. The devastating part was because he wouldn't perjure himself under oath at a deposition.
When Honest Tom lost his job we were in the midst of getting ready for a wedding out of state and teenage rebellion. It was already a hectic, demanding time for us. I kept waiting for the frantic, frenzied state of mind to fall on me, but guess what? It didn't.
Oh, there were some anxious moments, but the overwhelming depression I'd experienced previously didn't threaten to swallow me whole. In the busyness of the time, it took me a while to figure out why I hadn't become consumed.
I don't know what it was, but soon I realized it was because I knew God had taken us through some challenging times before and we could trust Him to do so again.
Have you been in any of those places? An unexpected decline in your situation? Moments of apprehension, focused on uncertainty? If so, hang on, HANG ON! God didn't put you there to leave you there. HANG ON! He's got a plan. Remember, trials support the triumphs.
Have you been in those places and known, sometimes quietly, sometimes zealously, that everything will somehow work out? If so, I celebrate with you! I am thrilled for you and the way you're allowing God to walk and talk in your life.
Wherever you are on the path to glory, I hope you'll pause every once in a while to reflect and say, "You've come a long way, Baby!"
