To serve as president, one must:
- be a natural-born U.S. citizen of the United States;
- be at least thirty-five years old;
- be a resident in the United States for at least fourteen years.
President Eisenhower brought another attribute to the Presidency, his faith.
Many people know President Eisenhower pushed to have "under God" added to the Pledge of Allegiance. Some know he also promoted the adoption of the United States's motto, "In God We Trust".
How many of us knew that during the early years of World War II, Eisenhower was part of a coalition in the Philippines to provide sanctuary for Jewish refugees?
I wonder if the Lord enjoys surpassing the already high expectations we tend to have for our public officials.
From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.
Luke 12: 48b NASB
Nicodemus was one of the Pharisees, a man with some clout among his people. 2 He came to Jesus under the cloak of darkness to question Him.
John 3: 1-2a VOICE.
There's always more to the story, isn't there, Dear Reader? The Pharisees bespoke resurrection and a messiah, but how could this carpenter claim to be the savior they were looking for? It certainly wasn't palatable to Jewish aristocracy as members of the Sanhedrin.
48 “Is there a single one of us Jewish rulers or Pharisees who believes he is the Messiah? 49 These stupid crowds do, yes; but what do they know about it? A curse upon them anyway!”[a]
50 Then Nicodemus spoke up. (Remember him? He was the Jewish leader who came secretly to interview Jesus.) 51 “Is it legal to convict a man before he is even tried?” he asked.
John 7:48-51 TLB
Nicodemus proved he was the best candidate when he got his brave on with the Jewish leaders. And then he offered up service that only one other man was willing to take on.
39 Nicodemus, who at first had gone to see Jesus at night, went with Joseph (of Arimathea), taking with him about one hundred pounds of spices, a mixture of myrrh and aloes. 40 The two men took Jesus' body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the spices according to the Jewish custom of preparing a body for burial.
John 19: 39-40 GNT
Perhaps the Lord takes pleasure in wanting the least likely person in a position of importance to Him. Maybe, Dear Reader, whatever jobs He's designed especially for us, He longs for us to be more than His apprentices. More than anything else, He longs for us to come to Him as His children.
