I may love all the decorating and entertaining of the Christmas season, but I'm definitely a Max. I don't lack for enthusiasm, but I do need explicit instructions, pictures, and if possible, someone beside me to guide me through each step of the project.
It's not really surprising that the kids are creative. My mom was a seamstress extraordinaire. Tom's mom is quite the painter and his dad could do amazing things with wood. I think there must be clever or imaginative gene, I just didn't happen to inherit it.
I don't think my dad had an imaginative gene in his body, but he excelled at research and organization. That's the gene I got! So, when I wanted to make a tablescape on a dresser in the dining room, I finally did what the kids and friends have been suggesting and went to Pinterest.
After downloading the app in the car, I spent time in a doctor's waiting room "pining" several vignettes I liked. Researching what I like was pretty easy, then my organizational brain kicked in.
Recent knee surgery prohibited shopping for decorative items, or even multiple trips to the basement for boxes. More than usual, I was thankful for my researching, organizing talents. Noting the common elements in the vignettes I liked best, gathering and arranging items didn't seem nearly as overwhelming as it used to be. Maybe it doesn't have to be creative or logistical after all.
A dear friend is excited to be going to the Rose Bowl Parade this year. This year she will have the opportunity to watch a float being created, but she hopes in the future she will have a chance to actually work on one herself. Thinking about projects of that magnitude, it's much easier to understand it takes both creative Marthas and logistical folks (Maxs) to make the float sketches come to life.
What kind of decorator are you, a Max, like me who has to work at it a little harder, or a Martha, who easily turns little into lavish? I'm thankful to be learning the beauty of the season takes both, but I'm also learning it mostly takes loving, generous hearts.
The heavens are telling of the glory of God;
And their expanse is declaring the work of His hands.
